Flat Matt Claypaint is an ultra-matt, clay-based interior paint designed to give walls a soft, chalky, non-reflective finish. It’s breathable, low VOC, and designed especially for period properties and those with lime plaster or other finishes that need breathability.
Flat Matt Claypaint is best for interior walls and ceilings, especially in living rooms, bedrooms and low-traffic spaces. It’s ideal anywhere you want that soft, design-led, ultra-matt finish - and need the breathability.
Claypaint uses natural clay minerals, which makes it breathable and lower in VOCs than traditional emulsions. It also gives a flatter, more refined finish - less sheen, more depth.
Flat Matt Claypaint isn’t designed to be fully washable. It’s wipeable for light marks, but for high-traffic areas like hallways or kitchens we'd suggest our tougher finishes such as regular Flat Matt, or Soft Sheen.
Very. Entirely. Flat Matt Claypaint has almost zero sheen, meaning it absorbs light rather than reflecting it. The result is a soft, velvety finish that hides imperfections and makes colour look richer.
In most cases, you’ll need two coats for a solid, even finish. Some lighter colours or well-prepared surfaces may get away with one, but we always recommend two coats for maximum depth of colour and durability.
It's our most gentle formula - made with low VOC ingredients and natural clays sourced from the UK. So it’s the best for your home and indoor air quality. It’s also ultra low odour, which means no harsh paint smell lingering around.
We wouldn’t recommend it for high-moisture or high-traffic areas. If it's a large bathroom or kitchen and well away from water sources or steam, it could work OK. But while it’s breathable, it’s not designed for heavy wear or regular cleaning. For those spaces, go for a more durable COAT finish like Soft Sheen.
Claypaint is breathable, and especially designed for older properties and those with lime plaster that needs to allow moisture to pass through. Claypaint works best on plaster, plasterboard, and previously painted walls that are properly prepared. It will work on woodwork, too. A smooth, clean surface will give you the best, most even finish.
If you've got lime plaster, then yes. If you've got a heritage property with specialist or old plaster - then almost certainly yes. But in any case, if you’re after perfectly flat walls, rich colour, and a more considered, low-impact paint - Claypaint is it. It’s easy to apply, beautifully breathable, and gives that effortless, design-grade finish COAT is known for.

perfect finish
Don’t be fooled by ‘jack of all trade’ paints. All COAT finishes are formulated with their specific job in mind. Get perfectly flawless finish that lasts — whatever the surface.
Do I need Primer? We recommend primer for any new wood, MDF, UPVC, Vinyl, or unstable looking surfaces. You’ll also need to mist-coat brand new plaster before adding your COAT colour.
