Yes, but only if it's formulated for it. COAT's Exterior Eggshell is purpose-built for outdoor use, with weather resistance and anti-colour fade built in. Interior eggshells aren't designed to handle rain, UV, or temperature changes - exterior ones are.
An Eggshell finish (around 20% sheen) is the go-to for exterior surfaces - durable enough to handle weather, with just enough sheen to repel moisture without looking shiny. COAT's Exterior Eggshell is water-based, A+ rated for VOC, and formulated specifically for masonry, wood, and primed metal.
With proper surface prep and two good coats, COAT Exterior Eggshell is built to last. We back it with a 5-year product warranty, and every tin is made to order so you're always getting a fresh batch - not paint that's been sitting in a warehouse.
Prepared masonry, wood, and primed metal. If you're painting bare metal, prime first. For glossy surfaces, sand back to a matt finish before applying. When in doubt, the prep work is where the finish is won or lost.
COAT Exterior Eggshell covers approximately 15m² per litre with two coats recommended. Measure your surface area, divide by 15, and multiply by two - that's your starting point. Available in 1L and 2.5L.
Touch dry in around 2 hours, re-coatable after 4. In cooler or damp conditions, allow longer. Don't paint below 5°C - the finish won't form properly.
Modern water-based formulations have largely closed the gap with older oil-based ones - and COAT's Exterior Eggshell is Scrub Class 1 rated to ISO 11998, weather resistant, and anti-colour fade. Water-based also dries faster, has lower VOC, and is easier to clean up. It's the considered choice for a reason, and matches the older oil-based products for durability.
Yes - you can use a sprayer with all COAT finishes, except for Claypaint (which can clog based on the mineral formulation). Use a high-quality airless sprayer and thin the paint by 10% with water. Work top to bottom in smooth, steady strokes, and always test on an inconspicuous area first. Two coats for best results.
Lower-grade paints can do. COAT Exterior Eggshell is formulated with anti-colour fade properties, so the shade you choose - whether that's a deep blue or a considered green - stays true for longer. Choosing the right colour matters, and so does the quality of the paint and pigment in the tin.
Every tin of COAT paint is made to order - no overproduction, no waste sitting in a factory. COAT is the world's first Climate Positive paint company and B Corp certified. We don't like to compare ourselves to others directly - but we do believe we're levelling up what it means to be sustainable in paints.
Choose your
perfect finish
Don’t be fooled by ‘jack of all trade’ paints. All COAT finishes are formulated with their specific job in mind. Get perfectly flawless finish that lasts — whatever the surface.
Do I need Primer? We recommend primer for any new wood, MDF, UPVC, Vinyl, or unstable looking surfaces. You’ll also need to mist-coat brand new plaster before adding your COAT colour.
