A Shoreditch Warehouse Apartment, by Zoë Starreveld
In the heart of Shoreditch, a former warehouse has been transformed into a dramatic, layered home where every wall and surface tells a story through colour. Designer Zoë Starreveld, working closely with the apartment’s owner - a musician with a love of rich, immersive interiors - used COAT paints to turn a neutral, industrial shell into a space that feels warm, and intimate.

“Collaborating with COAT Paints on this project made the selecting process so much easier,” explains Zoë Starreveld. “From the outset, I was inspired by my client’s love of bold, rich and contrasting tones that bring warmth to every room, echoing the layered interiors found at places like House of Koko. I wanted a palette that felt slightly dramatic for entertaining but also welcoming colours that glow in candle light.”

Deeply pigmented, sustainably made COAT shades were applied across walls, joinery, and architectural features, creating a bold, cohesive vision that is both sophisticated and liveable. In the hallway, Zoë chose The Old Corset Factory, bridging connecting spaces, harmonising warm reds and terracotta, while complementing brass fixtures.
For the main living space, she selected Park Life, a grubby green with a grey-sage undertone - a colour that thrives in areas with limited natural light and balances the darker tones used elsewhere in the apartment. Even the studio curtains were matched to Park Life, creating subtle visual continuity that ties the space together. “Choosing COAT allowed me to realise a bold, cohesive vision that feels both sophisticated and instantly liveable, rather than typically playing it safe - it worked!” she says.

The apartment’s open-plan layout flows effortlessly: the kitchen anchors one end, the dining area sits at the centre, and the lounge stretches outward, anchored by a sectional sofa in tactile vermilion velvet. A music studio, framed by floor-to-ceiling velvet curtains, houses a vinyl library and high-spec sound system, while an imported art deco bar serves as a sculptural focal point. Every surface - walls, ceilings, and joinery - was considered a canvas for colour, light, and atmosphere.

By pairing COAT’s bespoke palette with careful craftsmanship, Starreveld has transformed a once-neutral warehouse into a home that is immersive, intimate, and dramatic - a space where colour, materiality, and light converge to create an experience that is entirely its own.
