Flat Matt Finish

Flat Matt is our most popular finish, with low sheen, even coverage, and true colour without being tricky to apply. It's suitable for most interior walls and ceilings - except for Bathrooms or Kitchens that are wet (choose Soft Sheen for that instead). COAT Flat Matt is designed to have that contemporary matt finish, but with Scrub Class 1 durability - meaning it stands the test of time and the knocks of daily life effortlessly.

Matt paint is the most popular choices for interior walls because it creates a clean, non-shiny finish that feels modern. It’s especially good in living and bedroom spaces, where you want colour to feel soft and natural.

If you've got a large bathroom with plenty of ventilation, it might work fine. But in smaller bathrooms, or anywhere with steam and water, we recommend our Soft Sheen finish - which is moisture resistant. When exposed to lots of water or steam the Flat Matt paint can streak (you may have experienced that in the past), so the Soft Sheen really is the perfect finish for these wet or steamy areas.

We typically recommend our Eggshell paint for woodwork, as it's engineered to apply more smoothly and is more durable for skirting and heavy-use. The colours are the same in both Flat Matt and Eggshell finish. You can use Flat Matt paint on woodwork if you want total uniformity - and this sometimes works fine on panelling or shelving etc. But please note that on skirting and trim, the Flat Matt is not as durable as the Eggshell finish.

Both regular Matt and COAT Flat Matt have a modern matt finish. Matt paint has a slight sheen, while our Flat Matt sits even lower - meaning absolutely no shine or reflection and a softer look. This completely matt look gives a modern feeling, and softens the edges of room to make it feel more chic and inviting.

Lower-sheen paints can show marks a bit more than tougher finishes like Soft Sheen or Eggshell. But the good news is that COAT Flat Matt is rated Scrub Class 1, which mean's it's the most durable matt paint you can get. It's wipeable too, so it handles everyday life with ease.

Most matt paints, including COAT Flat Matt, are wipeable rather than fully washable. You can clean light marks, but it’s not designed for constant scrubbing. If you need a washable paint for kitchens, bathrooms or very dirty areas, you're better to select a Soft Sheen finish which is moisture resistant and washable.

In most cases, you’ll need two coats for a solid, even finish. Some lighter colours or well-prepared surfaces may get away with one, but we always recommend two coats for maximum depth of colour and durability.
