What does the business do?
"We’re a sustainable art brand that repurposes pre loved canvases and transform them into beautiful, contemporary art for a range of interior spaces" says George. "We hand craft our professional tray frame in house which is included in the price and service".
Why did you decide to start your business?
"When everyone went clear-out crazy is Lockdown 1.0, the amount of canvases and pictures that I saw in skips and left outside charity shops (that were shut!) was alarming" says George. "I couldn’t bare the thought of them just being chucked away, ending up in landfill so I decided to go round collecting them and repurposing them. It started off as a hobby and a side hustle, but last month I quit my job as a menswear buyer in the fashion industry to focus on the business full time".
As a small business ourselves, COAT support George with keen discounts on our luxe sustainable paint. Colours like warm greige 'Sunday Soul', off-black 'David Rose' and dark olive 'Nomad' have featured in George's killer pieces.

What are your values?
"Sustainability is what we do and it is why we started" says George. "Aside from reusing pre-loved work, I like to think my work is timeless and not ‘trend driven’ so much. It works with lots of different styles and I hope it remains relevant through the years to come and isn’t as easily discarded as the previous canvases were".
As a Carbon Neutral Paint Co. from day one, we really feel this. We're not out on weekends hugging trees or anything, but we make conscious ethical choices in how COAT is run as a business. And we think, like George does, that giving people an ethical buying choice is an important thing 🌿
How do you choose colours and patterns?
"I’m inspired by so many different things." says George. "Nature, architecture, interior trends. I worked in the fashion industry for 8 years so this will always be the biggest influence of what I do, the palettes that I use and the designs I create."

How do you work with clients?
"I work on made-to-order basis to reduce waste as much as possible. I have a number of different designs which I post on my IG page (shameless plug... @studio.lawrence) which I can work on for clients, or work into something more bespoke to suit the clients brief/interior style" says George.
What's the price range?
"Pieces are priced by size and I like to think that we cater for the vast majority of budgets. Prices start from £195 for 50cm x 50cm piece and range to £700 for the largest pieces we do (150cm x 100cm)."
"We pride ourselves on being affordable in the art industry" says George. "Art can be a very intimidating world for customers and is seen to only be available to the super rich. Us working class people like our homes to look good too - and that’s where we come in!"
How can someone place an order?
"Get in touch with me via Instagram @studio.lawrence. We’ll have a chat about what it is you’re after and once we’ve agreed on the specification, I’ll send over a full contract outlining all details" says George.
We bloody love George and the creative products of studio.Lawrence. Now's the time to support small, innovative and conscious businesses like this - so COAT's backing his work all the way.
