As the nights draw in we can all end up feeling a bit bleurgh 😩 The summer's long gone, it's chilly and damp, and we're spending much less time in the great outdoors. So how do you keep your spirits up as the temperature takes a turn for the worse? Get the paint brush out, that's how....
With a little bit of help from COAT Paints, you can turn your pad into a cosy sanctuary in no time. It's all about choosing rich, autumnal colours and adding texture and contrast with chunky throws and rustic accessories. You've got this 👊

IT'S ALL ABOUT COLOUR
Autumnal paint colours tend to reflect the natural world and we've got all those earthy tones covered with our curated range of pigment-rich shades. The hedgerows are bursting with colour at the moment, which is why shades such as grubby green Darlington, deep brown Brasserie Brown and deep greige Debate Club are spot on for a dramatic living room makeover.
All the Autumnal vibes in @joeykendalbrown's home as she pairs Darlington with Pampas in her cosy living room.
If lighter neutral tones are more your thing, why not go for timeless Well Grounded or a pale taupe like Good Intentions? They work really well in dark, autumnal interiors, and look extra cosy when layering neutral textured fabrics and accessories.
Keeping the backdrop neutral will allow you to add plenty of colour and texture with characterful accessories. The perfect approach for a rental property where you might be limited on how bold you can go with the wall colour. Pair them with natural woods and lots of greenery for a warm and uplifting vibe 🌿
If neutrals are your thing, why not try Duvet Day, paired with rich rust tones like @beckacutlerdesign has done in her living room.
Our taupe Sunday Soul is warm and welcoming, a bit like a comforting hug, and would be the perfect foil for a green velvet sofa or dark wood furniture. Warm off-white Pampas is also warm but unthreatening – much like some of our favourite people 😂 Pair Pampas with textured neutrals and rust colours for a harmonious look.
Check out our warm neutrals in our Autumn Edit.
Rich greens are also big news for autumn 2022, bringing a soothing and restorative feel to a space. Read more about how to choose the right green for your home in our blog post Glorious Greens And How to Use Them 💚
Debate Club works well with reddish woods which @matt_t_porter has incorporated into his bedroom design.
LAYER UP THOSE COSY TEXTURES
Texture is absolutely key for creating a cosy look this autumn. Start from the ground up with a statement rug. Our current fave is this dotted Moroccan-style Ourain rug which is 100% wool and super fluffy 🐑 Then if you're after a woven jute rug, check out this scalloped one from La Redoute, adding texture and warmth to your room.

Cosy throws are another way to add layers of texture to a scheme. Drape them over your sofa for a handy bit of extra warmth. Faux sheepskin, lambswool or cable knit are our go-tos for the colder months. This HKliving Soft Woven Throw is a surefire way to add a layer of subtle, bobbly loveliness.
It's all about textures, and @danlovattdesign knows just how to do it...
Wooden cladding is another option when it comes to adding texture and warmth. Tongue and groove to dado rail height will never go out of fashion and can be painted in a contrasting shade to the walls to create a colour block effect. Natural wood finishes also help bring a room bang up to date, with horizontal shiplap planks and slatted vertical strips both proving super popular this season.
Furniture and flowers are key, take inspo from Dan and his beautiful style side board against the Cold Brew painted wall.
Don't forget that you can update your look with furniture, too. What could be better as we edge towards Christmas than a vintage-inspired drinks trolley or sideboard? We love the Flute Marble Drinks Cabinet from Atkin and Thyme with its marble top and dark, reeded doors. And if you're looking for extra texture in the bedroom, it's hard to beat the natural, woven feel of the Adèle Headboard from Tikamoon or the furry Upholstered Bouclé Armchair from Zara Home.
IF IN DOUBT, ACCESSORISE!
So, you've got all the big stuff sorted with the walls, floors and furniture. Now it's time to pick out some accessories to add character and colour to your cosy scheme. Natural materials such as rattan, bamboo and wicker are big news this autumn, so get channelling that rustic vibe. Nkuku have lovely seagrass baskets which would look perfect by the fire, and Graham and Green's wicker tray is a great way to add texture to a coffee table or sideboard.
@thehomerebel uses plenty of natural materials in her space, neutrals upon neutral...layer up.
We can't get enough of rustic vases this season. We particularly like H&M Home's sculptural large ceramic vase in light beige with its wonderfully curved ripples and the large stoneware vase in dark grey. Why not fill them with dried grasses or faux stems to create extra height and texture? Abigail Ahern stocks some brilliant faux botanicals in lovely autumny colours. You can't go wrong with the Melaleuca Purples or the Catkin Cream, which are sold as single stems.
If you want to go the whole hog with the autumnal theme, a seasonal wreath for your front door made from feathers, leaves or fruit is an absolutely must. Why leave it until Christmas?
Whatever you choose for your home this autumn, keep it warm, textured and rustic for a cosy look to help you hunker down til spring.
Take inspo from @joeykendalbrown and her autumnal wreath and dried flowers hung in her hallway.
