Stagnant Pond
Whilst the fresh greens of new shoots and leaves symbolise life - murkier greens, often with a yellow edge, can feel dangerous in the wild. Humans are rightly wary of stagnant water and mould, because they’re full of nasty bacteria. But in the home, yellow-based greens, when paired with soft furnishings and warm lighting, feel quite the opposite. Changing the context makes these colours feel deeply safe and stable, without any brashness to stimulate our eyes. They’re a truly timeless choice.
Rotting Leaves
Decaying leaves squelching underfoot? You can hear it, right? And that’s unlikely to feature on your Pinterest mood boards. But brown can be seen in nature as full of life - in fertile soil, flower bulbs, and in tree bark. Context is important again, because a heap of rotten leaves or muddy bogs are unlikely to create any feeling of comfort outdoors. But bring those colours inside - and brown leather, brown wood, and plush furnishings… you start to see how context is important.
Drab, Dank & Murky
There’s something deeply soothing about being clean, warm, and safe when there’s a storm blowing outside. Gazing out of the window as it’s battered with rain - fire blazing.
