Scandi and Minimal, At Home with Melanie Sinclair

This week’s beauty is home to Melanie; a hairdresser and small business owner living in Scotland. After a very recent move to a three-bedroom detached with her husband, Greig, and their two daughters, Abbey and Mila; all their spare time is now being pumped into its renovation and conversion.

Melanie’s interior preferences are built around all things neutral and Scandinavian. She prefers a minimal, fresh décor; choosing to interchange accents and accessories, instead of complete redecoration projects. This is a much more sustainable way of living, especially if you consistently rotate through the same seasonal pieces, year on year.

Melanie opted for 'Good Intentions' in her daughter Abbey's room.

Inspiration, for Melanie, comes from keeping up with the Nordic and Scandi trends: clean lines, beautifully functional, and clutter-free. Neutral palettes are often misunderstood, and don’t always mean icy and unwelcoming spaces – as Melanie has proven all too well. Cosy layers, dreamy beiges and natural textures – it’s really not hard to see why this has become one of the biggest trends in recent years.

A COAT LOVE AFFAIR…

Our eco-friendly approach to decorating spoke to Melanie; as well as our selection of earthy paint colours, which always tend to catch her eye! Something all neutral lovers can certainly relate to.

“I choose ‘Good Intentions’ for Abbey’s bedroom, and was drawn to it straight away. I loved the warm tones and knew it would look great alongside the things I had already purchased. I ordered the 'Peel-and-Stick' Swatch and used it on different walls throughout the day to see how it changed in different lights. It’s such a great idea, and really helps to make an informed decision, without covering your walls in small paint patches!

The paint was beautiful. It’s such a gorgeous colour and really easy to apply. I chose the matt finish and it was just what I wanted.”

TAKE A LOOK INSIDE…

Melanie has chosen to share her three bedroom makeovers with us, as they are some of her favourite projects to date. Before the transformations began, Melanie described the rooms as extremely dull and filled with dark woodwork, which also made the rooms feel smaller.

'Good Intentions' adds a sophisticated, grown up tough to Abbey's room, one that is timeless.

The first bedroom is that of her eldest daughter, Abbey; which, as previously mentioned, is painted in our flat matt, pale taupe, ‘Good Intentions’. Beautifully decorated and accessorised to perfection, this room is perfect for a little girl who is growing up fast.

An off white like 'Low Salt' is the perfect neutral, bringing a hint of warmth to the room whilst looking fresh.

Finally, we take a nosey around Melanie & Greig’s bedroom – another neutral haven that looks incredibly inviting. Once again, she has managed to create a clean minimal aesthetic, whilst also using the layering techniques that help to create warmth and comfortability.

Our favourite features include the panelled wall, and the contrasting black hardware.

WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS…

With a renovation project on their hands, the DIY list is pretty extensive; but Mel & Greig plan to start on the living room, next. This requires blocking off a wall and completely stripping the space back.

We’re a sucker for a renovation project, so we’ll be staying tuned for this one!

MELANIE FROM @ITS_ALL_ABOUT_THE_HOUSE LENDS SOME ADVICE…

“Try to pick something that will last, instead of opting for something that will age quickly. It’s easy to see décor styles trending online and think that it’s the perfect fit for you; but ultimately, it will end up costing you more money (and time!) to continuously change it when the trend becomes outdated and you change your mind.

I’d also recommend selecting colours that will compliment the rest of your house. A continued theme brings a real harmony to your home.”
