If your room is in need of a quick spruce, the trusty feature wall can be the perfect decorating pick-me-up. Accent walls provide great opportunities to experiment with shapes, colours, and patterns. They can be high impact, or bring a different mood and interest to a room. Whether you’re pushing on with a big change or just a subtle improvement, a feature wall is quick, easy and cost-effective.

The Do's of Feature Walls
Emphasize the space - Use a feature wall to define a living space. This can help in a lot of apartments and new builds where you have open plan or multi-use spaces. An accent wall can create separate spaces, for instance, highlighting a dining area or a snug corner.
Complementary colours just work - Make sure that whatever colour you choose it complements the rest of the room. Choosing a bright or bold colour can be great, but only if it fits in with the rest of the colour scheme. Bold just for the sake of bold is never a good idea. Grab some COAT samples and have a play. And remember to check these samples when it's both light and dark- this'll ensure that the colour you think is perfect really is.
Paint is a piece of cake - Opt for paint when you want a simple and inexpensive way to update your room. It doesn’t have to be block colour, get inspired with stencils and patterns, it’s the easiest material to change should you want to try something else out.

The Don'ts of Feature Walls
The right room is key - Don't opt for a feature wall because you are scared to paint an entire room in a particular colour. While it is a great option if you think the colour may be too overwhelming for the entire room, don’t do it out of fear. A feature wall should be a highlight, not a consolation prize.
Find your focal point - The feature wall should be used to highlight the room's existing focal point. This could be the wall where the TV is, or your favourite mirror, both make for a good feature wall. The wall behind the headboard in a bedroom is also a good shout. The point is that the eye should be drawn to one spot and if the feature wall is anywhere other than the focal area, the eye will not have a place to rest. A randomly placed feature wall ain’t so great.
Small room struggles - Steer clear of accent walls in tiny rooms. It will only make it look smaller. If you want a bold colour in a small room, you are better off painting all the walls. Go big or go home.
