Pantone Colour of The Year 2021

Pantone just launched their colour of the year for 2021. Well, two colours actually - Illuminating Yellow and Ultimate Grey. A positive bright yellow, and a steely resilient grey.

It’s got to be said, we’re a bit over feeling Grey this year. But we’re definitely HUGE fans of yellow. Warm and uplifting, it’s just a happy shade. And that’s something we can get onboard with.

Introducing 'Fantone '21' - COAT's yellow nod to Pantone's Yellow Colour of 2021.

Why is Yellow A Big Deal In 2021?

Yellow is a warm colour. It’s generally one associated with warmth, energy, spring, summer and generally being outdoors. Yellow has been used in homes for hundreds of years, so it’s definitely a timeless shade.

“2021 is a year pinned with hope for lots of us. Yellow is going to be an important part of filling next year with the kind of optimistic vibe we’re all after.” Says Rob Green, COAT Founder. “Fantone ‘21 channels that. As a muted pastel yellow, it works really nicely  as a versatile colour in most homes.”

Any Watch-Outs For Yellow?

It’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Some yellow shades can be a little obnoxious and shouty. Apparently people are more likely to lose their tempers in yellow rooms, and babies cry more in yellow rooms too. But quite a lot comes down to the choice of shade.

“A punchy feature wall in a grubby dark yellow like Moritz can be seriously impactful. Despite being yellow it’s a dark shade, and works especially well in period homes.” Says Rob Abrahams, COAT Founder. “Fantone ‘21 on the other hand is a really subtle yellow with the breadth of a warm neutral. Team it with pure white woodwork and throw in some black accents for a warmed-up Japandi vibe.”

Top Tips For Using Yellow At Home

Choose The Shade Carefully. The shade of yellow you choose is important - with a mellow yellow like Fantone ‘21 working nicely as a neutral in most spaces, and a dark grubby yellow Moritz taking a bolder role.

Let It Shine Alone. Whatever the shade, yellow is a dominant colour. So let it shine (literally), and don’t be tempted to pair it with other colours - it rarely works, and can look a little novelty and ‘tutti-frutti’.

Check Your Undertones. Yellow is a primary colour so strictly speaking shouldn’t have other undertones. But most do - so watch out for greeny-looking yellows in particular that can make a dark room look more grim than cheerful.

Fantone ‘21 is COAT’s nod to Pantone’s Colour Of The Year 2021 - Illuminating Yellow. By toning down the vibrancy just a little, COAT has created a muted yellow that drives the 2021 trend towards pastel shades in a seriously positive direction. Warm, happy and surprisingly versatile - it’s a colour we can all easily embrace in our homes next year for that much needed positive vibe.
